Requirements
How do I maintain an active Honors Academy membership?
Maintaining your status is a matter of consistent academic excellence and proactive planning. Because the Academy is a self-managed Honors Journey, you are responsible for monitoring two key benchmarks to ensure you are on track for graduation:
- The GPA Standard: Maintain a cumulative college GPA of 3.5 or higher.
- The Progress Pace: Earn Honors credits at a rate that ensures you meet the 24-hour requirement.
What does a “successful pace” look like?
- Four-Year Students: If you have earned 60 total credit hours toward your degree, you should ideally have at least 12 Honors credits completed.
- Transfer Students: If you have four semesters remaining, you should plan on earning at least 6 Honors credit hours each semester.
How many Honors credit hours do I need to graduate with University Honors?
To achieve Â鶹ŮÀÉ’s highest academic distinction, members must earn a total of 24 Honors credit hours. To ensure academic depth and rigor, these credits must meet the following criteria:
- Upper-Level Depth: At least 12 credit hours must be earned in 30000- and/or 40000-level courses.
- Academic Excellence: You must maintain a cumulative university GPA of 3.5 or higher through graduation.
Transfer Students: You may apply up to 12 credit hours of Honors transfer credit toward the 24-hour requirement. Acceptance of these credits is at the discretion of the Honors Academy to ensure they meet program standards.

How do I earn Honors credit hours?
There are two ways to earn Honors credit. While specialized Honors designated courses are offered occasionally, the “Professional Standard” for most Honors students is the faculty partnership model.
Honors-Enhanced Assignments (The Professional Standard)
This is the primary way to customize your Honors journey. You can transform almost any undergraduate course into an Honors experience through a faculty partnership.
- The Partnership: Collaborate with your instructor to design assignment(s) that deepens your understanding of the course material.
- The Agreement: Complete an Honors Course Agreement and email it to the Honors Academy by the midterm deadline.
- The Goal: Complete the agreed-upon assignment(s) and earn a final course grade of A to receive AH credit.
Honors-Designated Courses
These are specialized courses open exclusively to Honors Academy members.
- Availability: These are primarily offered as “introductory” or General Education courses for first-year students to help them build a community early on.
- The Process: You are automatically enrolled for Honors credit (no agreement form needed).
- The Requirement: You must earn a final grade of A (AH) or B (BH) to receive Honors credit.
Why is there a different grade requirement?
Because Honors-designated courses are built with a more rigorous curriculum from day one, a “B” reflects significant achievement. For “regular” courses that you choose to enhance, the “A” grade ensures you have mastered the standard material while also going above and beyond with your independent Honors project.
